Constitution Day at NAU

The NAU Conservatives, in honor of Constitution Day, utilized a variety of different means in passing out pocket Constitutions to the general student body. They based their operations right outside of the student union, placing them firmly in the center of the most trafficked area on campus. First, they quizzed students on the amendments. Surprisingly enough, there were a fair number of students who were more or less familiar with the Bill of Rights. The person who knew the most amendments was actually a student who was studying abroad here in the states, which they found to be pretty interesting. Furthermore, they asked students to attempt locating bases for leftist causes within the Constitution. Of course, this was done to no avail and many of the students were surprised when coming to this realization. Throughout the course of the day, they even encountered a professor who encouraged them with regard to what we were doing and stated that she watched “Glen Beck” on Fox News and also that NAU is “Berkeley East.” Their efforts were perceived fairly favorably, and, as a result, they felt successful in our endeavor to promote constitutional knowledge. All event attendees were given flyers and invited to attend next week's meeting (meetings are held at 7 pm upstairs in the Union expansion). They were entered into a raffle, in which the winner will receive a copy of Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny.

Constitutional Chaos comes to ASU!

In honor of Constitution Day, The Young Americans for Liberty at ASU held "Constitutional Chaos" on campus this past Thursday. Along with handing out pocket Constitutions to students, the group also hosted Nick Dranias, Director of Constitutional Government at the Goldwater Institute, inside the MU. Dranias spoke on how the 10th Amendment (one of the many amendments that progressives routinely disregard) provides for a dual system of government (imagine that!). While the federal government is prohibited from exercising any powers not enumerated in the Constitution, the states are also prohibited from creating "dispersed fiefdoms of tyranny free from federal meddling," as evidenced by, for example, the 13th and 15th amendments. The audience found Dranias' talk both informative and vital for understanding not only the threats that exist to the federal constitution, but to the rights of citizens within their respective states. 9-11 Memorial at NAU

This past week, the NAU Conservatives honored those who were murdered in the terrorist attacks in Washington D.C., New York City, and Pennsylvania on September 11th, 2001. They did so by sticking a flag for each victim into green spray-painted styrofoam, which was then placed on the student union amphitheatre, a heavy-traffic area on campus. Coming by the event to offer their perspectives on this infamous day in history, Hugh Kealer and Bradley Beauchamp, leaders in the local conservative movement, talked about what 9-11 meant to them and the need for continued vigilance against attacks on American soil. Later on, the NAU Conservatives read aloud the name of each victim and concluded the memorial with the a showing of "102 Minutes That Changed America," a 9-11 documentary created by the History Channel.

While most onlookers appreciated the 9-11 memorial, a few dirt bags had the audacity to come and ask sarcastically if the purpose of the memorial was to commemorate victims of the Iraq war. One of them also posed the question as to why American flags were put out for those victims who were foreigners. Despite these absurdities, the event was successful in maintaining awareness of 9-11 at the NAU campus and the need to never let such an attack occur on American soil again.

Taking back the nation (and the university) one tea party at a time!

Earlier this week, Campus Reform Arizona made a trip up to Flagstaff, one of the stops for the "Tea Party Express," a tour that is holding tea parties 34 cities across the nation in 16 days and ending up in Washington DC on September 12th for the 9/12 March on Washington. Among the organizations sponsoring the march on Washington, which is sure to draw hundreds of thousands of people, are FreedomWorks and Campaign for Liberty.

A few of the inspiring speakers from last Monday's rally in Flagstaff included Mark Williams and Deborah Johns, both vice-chairs of Our Country Deserves Better PAC, and Tom Jenney, Arizona state director of Americans for Prosperity. The event certainly made its mark on the nationwide tour, which began in Sacramento on August 28th, with over 1,000 patriots in attendance and FOX News, including Griff Jenknis, on the scene. Given that Flagstaff is not a bastion of conservatism or libertarianism, the turnout was very significant. Furthermore, all walks of life were represented, even college students! With the movement against big government liberalism growing throughout the country, it appears that college students are particularly involved.

The NAU Conservatives were out defending the cause of liberty through rallying and having an informational booth at the event. Among the Arizona's college campuses, a fire is spreading among the conservative and libertarian students, and the NAU Conservatives are a prime example of this. It is this fire that I wish to further ignite and encourage students to use in taking back the university and the culture in general. Whether it be through hosting a speaker, putting together a student publication or even holding a tea party, there are a variety of ways in which liberty-minded students can express their views in a powerful way. To all students, join me in this effort to defend the Constitution and to defeat tyranny!

Throughout the blistering hot Arizona desert, a spirit of liberty and freedom is arising. Students on the state's college campuses are coming together to fight the oncoming liberal onslaught. Each campus differs in terms of the magnitude of left-wing insanity that is present. But, rest assured, there are many strong conservatives, libertarians, and other right-leaning thinkers that are rolling up their sleeves to make their presence on campus known. I've been to ASU West, ASU Tempe, and NAU since I've arrived in Arizona, and I've been very impressed with how active and passionate the students are.

Hip hip hooray for federal subsidies!

Number of Federal Subsidy Programs Tops 1,800 - Chris Edwards, Director of Tax Policy Studies, Cato Institute

Mr. Edwards explains that not only has federal spending doubled from merely eight years ago when the Bush Administration came into power, but also that government is charting new territory by intervening in areas typically left to the states, localities, and individuals. Not only are these subsidies in and of themselves costly on the part of the taxpayer, but they also foster lobbying groups that push for an even more enhanced government role in those respective areas and so forth. This situation is slated to only become worse with the Obama Administration in power. Yet, with the Tea Parties and other expressions of public sentiment against this level of government intervention (spending, taxing, etc), there is hope that the country's current trajectory might change towards what our Founding Fathers envisioned: limited government, individual rights, and free enterprise.
